June 7, 2009 marks the 25th running of the Philadelphia International Championship. Sponsored by TD Bank and presented by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the 156-mile classic remains the longest running and most important single-day cycling road race in the United States.
The cyclists complete 10 laps of a 14.4-mile circuit that links the majestic Benjamin Franklin Parkway with the hillside community of Manayunk, site of the legendary Manayunk Wall, named by Pro Cycling Tour’s David Chauner and Jerry Casale, a steep half-mile cruncher that has become a Philadelphia icon and favorite spot for race watchers. The pros will finish with three laps of Lemon Hill and Logan Circle, having logged 156 miles total in one of the biggest special sporting events in the country.
The day also includes the Liberty Classic with more than 100 professional, international women cyclists competing. The 57.6-mile race consists of four laps of a 14.4-mile circuit through Philadelphia with four steep climbs up the grueling Manayunk Wall. The Liberty Classic is held during the men’s International Championship on the same course.

The TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship is just six days away.
And now, more than ever, the race needs your support.
The challenges of producing America’s biggest, single-day professional bike race were

sponsorship environment and the overall economic crunch led to a financial gap for the
race approaching $500,000. Read the whole story.

The event that started it all for international, professional cycling in the U.S. needs your help. After 24 years as the largest single-day, professional cycling race in North America, the Philadelphia International Championship is in jeopardy.
The economic challenges experienced in both corporate and civic circles have converged to create a shortfall in the operating budget of the race’s 25th year, and the reality of the situation is that unless a $500,000 gap can be closed in the next several days, the race will be cancelled. (To read an article on the status of the race in The Philadelphia Inquirer, click here.)
While the scenario seems extraordinary, what we know is truly extraordinary is the love of this event among fans, cyclists and sports enthusiasts in Philadelphia, throughout the Delaware Valley and across the country. This is a decidedly difficult position for any event organizer – and perhaps one that’s become too familiar in recent months.
However, it is because of the incredible support the Philly race has enjoyed throughout its history, that we are bringing an appeal directly to you, the fans and cycling community. Thousands of fans line the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and streets of Manayunk each June to watch the world’s best in this sport. There is power in those numbers, and we’re hoping that power can help save the 25th running of the race. Full Story and How You Can Help
In a year when most auto sales have shifted into low gear, MINI is moving full speed ahead to introduce its zippy, eco-efficient models to the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Proving that motoring is fun – even if you don’t have a motor – MINI today announced that it is signing on as the automotive sponsor of the TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship, Philadelphia’s annual kick-off event to summer that draws some 300,000 fans. This year’s June 7th event will mark the 25th running of the nation’s top cycling classic, and a special MINI Cooper pace car will lead the pack for both the men’s and women’s international races.
The eight MINI vehicles, to be put into service during the six-hour, 156-mile men’s race and the two-and-a-half hour, 55-mile women’s Liberty Classic, will be provided by two Philadelphia-area dealers – MINI of the Main Line in Bala Cynwyd and Otto’s MINI of West Chester. MINI will be represented by all model types, including the MINI Cooper, MINI Cooper S, MINI Cooper Clubman, and the all-new MINI Cooper Convertible, along the 14.4-mile race course that stretches from the city’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway to its hillside neighborhood of Manayunk.
