CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR RACE WEEKEND: TD BANK PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Elite pro cyclists from some 30 countries will descend on Philadelphia on Sunday, June 5, 2011 for the TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship – America’s biggest single day race.  This year’s event will mark the 27th running of the only UCI Hors Category classic road race in the United States.  In addition to the Philadelphia International Championship, the event’s companion race, the Liberty Classic, will celebrate its 18th anniversary and feature some of the world’s top women’s teams.  A full weekend of activities surrounds these world-class races, with fun for the whole family.

Saturday, June 4

 

7 a.m. Amateur Time Trials 

Open to the public, this eight-mile, professionally-timed course, beginning at the foot of the Art Museum will take you along scenic West River Drive and back, providing cyclists of all levels and ages the chance to log their best time. Compete against friends and family, or try to beat your time from last year as you race against the clock.  Number pick-up begins at 6 a.m.; first rider off at 7 a.m.  Registration in advance only

 

Noon – 6 p.m. Philadelphia Cycling, Health & Fitness Expo

Check out everything you need to know about cycling, fitness and sports at the two-day Philadelphia Cycling, Health & Fitness Expo, located course-side on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.  Visitors can check out the latest in bikes and cycling gear and explore all of the health, wellness and fitness resources the region has to offer. 

 

1 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. LIVE MUSIC: Funky Fontana 

Inspired by legends like James Brown, the Temptations, Michael Jackson, and the Black Eyed Peas, don’t miss out on the FREE concert by Funky Fontana Band at the Health & Fitness Expo. 

 

 

Sunday, June 5

 

7:15 a.m. – 8:45 a.m.  Wellness Challenge 

Cyclists of all levels can test their mettle on the Manayunk Wall during the annual Wellness Challenge – participants will ride the 14.4-mile loop of the professional course before the world’s top cyclists start their race. Register in advance or that morning beginning at 6 a.m. at the main staging area at Kelly Drive and Sedgely just below the Art Museum. Fee is $45 in advance; $55 day of event.

 

8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Philadelphia Cycling, Health & Fitness Expo 

Day two of the Philadelphia Cycling, Health & Fitness Expo offers everything you need to know about gear, apparel, foods, resources, organizations and more that can support your active lifestyle.  Check it out, course-side on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.  Perfect activity for in-between laps.   

 

8 a.m. to 3 p.m. TD Bank Family Fun Zone 

Looking for something fun to do with the kids between laps?  Make sure to visit the TD Bank Family Fun Zone located at the base of the Art Museum steps.  This special TD Bank spot is at the heart of race day action and feature entertaining activities for the whole family, including a water ice giveaway.

9 a.m. TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship, 

9:10 a.m. Liberty Classic

 

VIP tickets available

See Tour de France winners, Olympic champions, Tour of California winners and more roll to the start line for 156 miles of Philly’s epic men’s course. Just 10 minutes later, the world’s best women line up with the hope of adding the Liberty Classic to their list of wins.  Don’t miss these elite athletes from more than 30 nations take on Philly!

 

VIP tickets are the best way to watch the race. Champions Row VIP tickets include all-day access to the fully catered VIP hospitality tent on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at the start/finish line, free parking and shuttle service, as well as a chance to ride in an official Acura pace car. Top of the Wall VIP tickets include a private, tented party at the summit of the infamous Manayunk Wall as cyclists power through ten grueling climbs. 

 

11:45 a.m. Junior PCT Grand Prix 

Open to Junior riders, ages 15 to 18, who qualify to compete.  Check out the up-and-comers as they tear around the loop between Logan Circle and Eakins Oval, sprinting for points on every lap!  

 

12:45 p.m. Cadence Cycling Foundation Sprints 

The Cadence Cycling Foundation helps Philadelphia youth between the ages of 9 and 18 to discover all the possibilities that the sport of cycling has to offer, and on Race Day, these inspiring cyclists will participate in thrilling sprints between Logan Circle and Eakins Oval, followed by an awards ceremony.

Want to be part of the action?  Sign up now to be a TD Bank bike race volunteer.  Hundreds of volunteers are needed for race day in the following areas:  course marshals, stage crew, foreign language interpreters and hospitality.
