TOP WOMEN’S TEAMS RACING INTO PHILLY FOR LIBERTY CLASSIC
- 6-2-2011
- Categorized in: 2011 Phila International Cycling Championship
On Sunday, June 5, the top female cyclists from across the globe will compete in the Liberty Classic, the companion race to the men’s TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship.
From age 18 to 53, the women represent all backgrounds and abilities, and this year’s roster includes several top local cyclists from the Philadelphia region, the current world champion, and the most decorated champion in the history of road racing.
Take a look through the top teams to watch in this year’s Liberty Classic:
Colavita Forno d'Asolo
One of the pre-race favorites, this team boasts current world champion Giorgia Bronzini of Italy, who won her title in a sprint finish. Philly resident Theresa Cliff-Ryan is also sprinter by nature and finished third here last year, packing a powerful 1-2 punch for this team.
Diadora Pasta Zara
This is a well-rounded team that has cards to play in a breakaway or a field sprint. The current US national champion Mara Abbott has is a top road rider and time trialist which would serve her well in a breakaway. Teammate Shelley Olds is also a successful track rider, specializing in endurance events.
HTC-Columbia
This team brings endurance to the race this year. Amber Neben is a former world champion in the time trial and already has posted results this year, finishing on the podium at the Pan American Championships. Teammate Evelyn Stevens had her best year in 2010, culminating with the US time trial championship and a top-ten finish in the world time trial championship.
HumanZoom
There is no discussion here, as the most successful female cyclist ever, Jeannie Longo, is always a threat to win any race she enters. She is once again the French national time trial champion and finished fifth at the world championships in 2010.
JUVEDERM - SPECIALIZED
Jenny Trew is one of the talented Canadians on this mostly-Canadian team. She is a national champion on the track in the team pursuit and is also adept on the road, winning a stage of the Tour of Prince Edward Island in 2009.
Mellow Mushroom
One of the most consistent and veteran racers in the US is Laura Van Gilder. The Cresco, Pennsylvania native has won more races in her nearly two decades as a pro than some of the riders in the field have even entered. She is one of the top sprinters in the field and knows how to win out of the field.
NOW Cycling
Anne Samplonius is a two-time Canadian national time trial champion who has many time trial wins in her career. If she gets into a breakaway, look for her to pick a time to attack and try to win all alone.
TIBCO - To The Top
Veteran racer Meredith Miller is one of the tough riders who race year-round -- road in the summer and cyclocross in the winter. A tireless domestique, Miller is likely to be in a breakaway and is an engine that could power it to the finish. Joelle Numainville is the current Canadian road race champion and has plenty of top results in her young career, including a sixth in the prestigious Tour of Flanders this year.
